“Some people come in our life as blessings. Others come in our life as lessons.”
For me, being a mother has been filled with blessings and lessons. My children have brought me tremendous joy and pride and have also taught me innumerable life lessons. I like to think of motherhood as one big blesson.
Today I celebrate my 18th Mother’s Day. All mothers know that the one thing we don’t often get from our children is appreciation. Every year, since my children could write, I’ve asked them for only one gift on Mother’s Day. I’ve requested a handwritten note, letting me know what they appreciate about me.
Here are a few of my favorites from the early years in elementary school:
“Thank you for being nice to me for my whole nine years… I love being around you because you are so fun…thank you for giving me hugs and kisses when I’m sad…I love when you come to all my games and you say you’re proud of me, even when my team doesn’t win.
As my children began to separate from me during the teenage years, they conveyed how they appreciated me, despite the fact that we didn’t always agree:
“Even though you don’t understand my sarcasm sometimes, I am glad you put up with it.”
“I know we don’t always get along, but I want you to know I love you so much.”
At every age, my boys have taught me that giving love and being loved are the two most important things in life. Now that’s a blessing and a lesson.
Love lasts. Love endures. Love is at the foundation of everything that matters.
On this Mother’s Day, I wish you all the BLESSON OF LOVE.
